Project overview

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Rio Tinto Exploration identified a major mineral sands resource in the Fort-Dauphin region of Madagascar. It is made up of three adjacent deposits known as Mandena, Petriky and Sainte-Luce.

"Madagascar is a model for further projects which are likely to follow in Africa and the developing world," says Rio Tinto chairman Paul Skinner. "The project is illustrating Rio Tinto's capability to apply a different development approach to that of the traditional engineering driven, data intensive effort. The engineering focus has given way to more involvement with other stakeholders, notably NGOs, and a stepped up local community development effort."
