In 1996, QMM decided to pursue a fully staffed social and environmental programme in collaboration with local residents and organisations such as Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Earthwatch, the Smithsonian Institute, Missouri Botanical Garden, various universities, the national and regional governments in Madagascar.
The most immediate direct impacts of the mine on local livelihoods are land use related. Negotiations for land use must be mutually satisfactory and involve compensation that protects and promotes the livelihoods of the people over the long term. View more on land use
