Social and environmental impact

In 1990, QMM decided to pursue a fully staffed social and environmental programme in collaboration with local residents and organisations such as Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Earthwatch, the Smithsonian Institute, Missouri Botanical Gardens, various universities, the national and regional governments in Madagascar.

The most immediate direct and local impacts of the mine on local livelihoods are land use related. Negotiations for land use must be mutually satisfactory, and involve compensation that protects and promotes the affected population’s livelihoods over the long term. More…
