QMM’s activities involve working with large, heavy equipment, explosives and chemicals, in environments that experience extreme temperatures. We also face normal industrial hazards such as driving vehicles, working at heights and operating machinery with dangerous moving parts.
But, despite all that, we believe that all injuries and fatalities are preventable. We regard safety as a core value and it remains a major priority. While we have one of the best records in the industry, we have committed ourselves to creating an injury free workplace. This is one where everyone, employees, contractors and visitors alike, goes home safe and healthy each day.
We know that safety is not about numbers - it's about people. The systems and targets we set are important, and while they have moved us forward, they are not enough in themselves to help us meet our goal of a fatality and injury free workplace. We know that simply doing more of the same is not going to move us forward.
People's behaviours are governed not only by systems, rules and procedures, but also by their personal beliefs and values, and the company culture within which they have to operate. At QMM like Rio Tinto, we are striving to develop an interdependent safety culture in all areas of our business. This involves having people, processes and systems working in unison and everyone being prepared to look out for each other and challenge unsafe practices
Our managers are expected to champion safety improvement and demonstrate genuine commitment through safety leadership. Our employees are also proactively involved in all areas of safety management and responsible for identifying and managing risks in the workplace with leadership support.
We also want our employees to reach an understanding that safety is not just something that needs to happen in the workplace. Another measure of our success will be when employees take the safe practices from their work life to their home life. Safely preparing for a task around the home will indicate that our safe working culture is being embedded, and that our people are setting the example for their children and our next generation of employees.
