Rio Tinto

Our approach to sustainable development

Approche

Rio Tinto believes that with effective partnering, our business can make an important contribution to the ongoing, global transition to sustainable development. Our strategy of investing in large, long life mines and businesses means that we operate on extended time horizons. Some of our projects last 40 years or more from mineral discovery through to closure, representing large scale, long term investments in fixed capital. These projects are often situated in remote locations.

Rio Tinto has made a strategic commitment to sustainable development. We believe that acting responsibly will result in long term business benefits. These include fewer risks and costs, more options, and the ability to further leverage reputation. It is corporate policy that our businesses, projects, operations and products contribute constructively to the company’s global transition to sustainable development.

We develop practical tools through Rio Tinto's sustainable development leadership panel. The tools are applied at local level across Rio Tinto Group businesses. Each differs in social, environmental, economic and governance circumstances. The sustainable development policy is implemented on-the-ground consistent with local priorities in the local context.

This approach gives local meaning to Rio Tinto's global sustainable development efforts. Our sustainable development policy is designed to be applied locally, leading to successful outcomes at local, national and international levels.

We work with experts from external organisations. Pooling skills and resources leads to achieving outcomes that none of us could achieve alone.
