The purpose and objectives of the biodiversity

Project QMM is currently piloting Rio Tinto’s global biodiversity strategy. QMM’s overall goal is to protect the unique biodiversity of the area and achieve a net positive impact (NPI) on biodiversity with the full participation of the community.

QMM’s conservation and monitoring programmes are based on biodiversity surveys that identified species of special concern for conservation and on a comprehensive database on the use of natural resources by local communities.

The goal of the programme is to:

  • Protect and conserve the unique biodiversity of the mining sites and other related infrastructures;
  • Identify opportunities to enhance biodiversity conservation;
  • Build capacity for better use of the natural resources;
  • Promote fast growing plantations for community use, biodiversity conservation, rehabilitation and dune stabilisation;
  • Work towards the restoration of the natural ecosystems and rehabilitation of the land;
  • Ensure compliance with environmental management programmes and assessments, in collaboration with the Malagasy Government's National Environmental Bureau (ONE); and
  • Ensure compliance with Rio Tinto's environmental standards, biodiversity strategy and principles, and community standards.

The biodiversity monitoring program includes more than 15 indicators with the objective of assessing cumulative impacts of construction and mining over time. The programme monitors forest areas, birds, reptiles and amphibians, lemurs and small mammals, marine turtles, whales, fishes, corals, benthos, crocodiles, vegetation, lobsters, etc.

Mitigation or avoidance measures are implemented where necessary.
