• Protect the unique biodiversity of the zone where Rio Tinto QMM works and achieve a net positive impact on the environment with active community participation
• Rehabilitate and restore sites and ecosystems disrupted by the company’s activities.

The team’s main tasks are:

• Risk assessment, via social and environmental impact studies, for the natural environment and ecosystems which will be affected by construction and mining
• Setting up biodiversity protective measures 
• Long-term impact monitoring using identified indicators
• Setting up conservation, rehabilitation and monitoring measures

In May 2008, Rio Tinto launched a major scientific publication that was the result of nearly 20 years' research into biodiversity, ecology and conservation as part of a planned mining project in south east Madagascar.
