The deep water Ehoala Port near Fort Dauphin on the south east tip of the island of Madagascar will not only export ilmenite from Rio Tinto QMM operation but is set to welcome cruise liners, container ships and refrigeration vessels, opening up a number of opportunities in the local community. In December 2008, the Zhen Hua 21 was the first vessel to dock at the port, offloading equipment for QMM operation. This marked the first of countless ships expected to use the Ehoala Port, thereby boosting the local and regional economy.
The Port is a public/private partnership between Rio Tinto and the Malagasy government. Rio Tinto is financing construction to the value of US$110 million while the government has paid US$35 million through the Anosy «Integrated Growth Poles» Project using funds from the World Bank. The port will comply with International Ship and Port Security code.
