Our response to migration

The Madagascar mineral sands project could exacerbate the migration phenomena. Large scale speculative migration, if not anticipated and managed, could increase competition for scarce resources like land, fuel, water and food.

A non-exhaustive list of prevention and mitigating measures were included in our environmental management plan:

Annual and multi-annual action plans have been made since 2001.

Migration risks include:

  • An increase in forest cutting for fuel, construction wood
  • Increased pressure on the conservation zones, potentially leading to biodiversity loss, as a result of increased need for agricultural land
  • Inflation and further marginalisation of the poorest segment of the population
  • Increase in sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS
  • Friction between migrants and residents
